Koraput Coffee Takes Center Stage

Bhubaneswar: The unique Koraput Coffee, an Arabica variety cultivated by tribal farmers in the Koraput district, is poised for international recognition as over 1,500 packets of its Tiger Blend are being sent to New Delhi for the upcoming BRICS Summit in 2026. This shipment was organized by the Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Ltd (TDCCOL), as confirmed by Branch Manager Rakesh Biswal.

Biswal noted that the order was fulfilled promptly, thanks to the collaboration of local coffee farmers and the workforce at the district's coffee packaging facility. Marketed as Koraput Coffee, this 100% Arabica, shade-grown coffee has gained popularity in the domestic market, particularly through e-commerce channels, due to its rich flavor and organic characteristics.

Tribal farmers cultivate coffee across various blocks in Koraput, including Laxmipur, Kashipur, Dasmantpur, Nandpur, Lamtaput, Koraput, and Pottangi. The region, located approximately 3,000 feet above sea level, provides ideal conditions for coffee growth, characterized by a cool climate and adequate rainfall.

The state government is actively promoting coffee farming in the area, with the ST and SC Development Department devising strategies to increase the cultivation area, thereby enhancing the livelihoods of tribal communities. The exposure at the BRICS Summit is anticipated to elevate the profile of Koraput Coffee, as Odisha aims to establish its indigenous Arabica in the specialty coffee sector.
