Kolkata Police Visits TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee's Residence Amid Property Notices
Police Action at TMC MP's Residence
On Monday, Kolkata police arrived at the official residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee, located at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road in Kolkata. However, the officers left shortly after their arrival without making any statements. This incident follows the issuance of notices by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to Abhishek regarding several properties linked to him, instructing him to present documents related to approved building plans.
The notices pertain to 17 to 21 properties owned or associated with Abhishek and were sent under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Act, 1980. This legislation grants authorities the right to seek clarifications regarding unauthorized constructions. Nevertheless, Kolkata's Mayor, Firhad Hakim, denied any connection to the notices, stating that as policymakers under the KMC Act, he had no knowledge of the matter.
Meanwhile, these notices have provided the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with an opportunity to criticize the TMC, which recently lost power to the BJP in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Minister Agnimitra Paul led the BJP's attack, asserting that Abhishek is not above the law and that notices have been issued concerning multiple properties linked to him and his family. The West Bengal minister questioned whether they consider themselves above the law, emphasizing that for 15 years they operated without accountability, but that is no longer the case. She mentioned that parts of his building are alleged to have been constructed without proper authorization, and he must provide clarification like any other citizen. If he possesses valid documents, no action will be taken, and any errors could be rectified.
In response, the TMC criticized the BJP for the notices, labeling the allegations against Abhishek as fabricated and baseless. The party described these claims as a narrative concocted by the BJP.
