Kolkata Police's Initiative for Road Safety

On Sunday, the Kolkata Police's 'Safe Drive Save Life' Half Marathon 2026 was inaugurated by Additional Commissioner of Police Santosh Pandey in Kolkata.

This initiative, part of a broader campaign by the West Bengal government, aims to enhance road safety awareness, minimize accidents, and prevent fatalities by encouraging adherence to traffic regulations, minimizing distractions, and promoting the use of seatbelts and helmets.

Praise from the Mayor

Firhad Hakim, the Kolkata Mayor and West Bengal Minister, commended the Kolkata Police for their dedication to ensuring the city's safety, referencing low road accident statistics and a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report that identifies Kolkata as the safest city in India.

"Kolkata has recorded the fewest road accidents, thanks to the efforts of the Kolkata Police. The NCRB report confirms Kolkata's status as the safest city in India, and this marathon is a celebration of that spirit," Hakim remarked.

Increased Awareness, Says Police Commissioner

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma highlighted the success of the half-marathon in raising road safety awareness.

"This event marks the 6th edition of the Safe Drive Save Life initiative, launched by the Chief Minister in 2016. The message of staying safe on the road and ensuring the safety of others is resonating with the public. Awareness has significantly increased, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all participants and our team," Verma stated.

Mass Participation in the Marathon

Former TMC MP and actress Mimi Chakraborty expressed her enthusiasm for the 'Safe Drive Save Life' half-marathon, noting the event's vibrant atmosphere.

"The excitement and love here are palpable. Over 50,000 participants have joined us today. I take immense pride in being part of a city that prioritizes safety," Chakraborty commented.

Kickoff of Traffic Safety Week

According to Santosh Pandey, the half-marathon also marks the beginning of Traffic Safety Week, which aims to foster road safety through community involvement.

"The 'Safe Drive Save Life' Half Marathon inaugurates Traffic Safety Week, with races organized across various distances. The turnout has been impressive, showcasing that road safety is a shared responsibility, not solely the duty of the police," Pandey concluded.
