Formation of Special Investigation Team

Kolkata Police has established a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the alleged rape incident that occurred at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kolkata. The primary suspect, Mahavir Toppanwar, also known as Paramanand Jain, has been remanded to police custody for seven days, from July 12 to July 19.

Suspect Arrested and Remand Requested

According to Kolkata Police, the Deputy Commissioner of the Southwest Division has initiated the formation of the nine-member SIT to delve into the case. Reports indicate that the suspect was apprehended on Saturday after a female clinical psychologist filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Haridevpur police station. Sourin Ghoshal, the chief prosecutor for Kolkata Police, stated, 'We requested police custody, while the accused sought bail, arguing that the encounter was consensual. We countered that this was not the case, as preliminary investigations indicate a crime occurred, supported by medical evidence from the victim. The court granted police custody until July 19.'

Victim's Father Denies Rape Allegations

In a surprising twist, the father of the alleged victim has dismissed the rape allegations. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, he claimed that his daughter sustained injuries from an accident. He recounted, 'I received a call from my daughter around 9:40 PM on Friday. She informed me that she had fallen from a vehicle, lost consciousness, and was injured. Later, I learned she was admitted to SSKM Hospital. Based on what my daughter told me, the police's claims are unfounded.'

Counseling Session Leads to Allegations

According to the police complaint, the woman was allegedly summoned to the hostel by the accused for counseling, where she reportedly faced sexual harassment. After hearing both sides, the additional chief judicial magistrate of Alipore Court ordered the suspect to be held in police custody. With the formation of the SIT, the case is now being treated with increased seriousness, especially given the father's claims that complicate the situation.
