Investigation Underway Following Fatal Incident

On Thursday, Kolkata Police apprehended an individual in relation to a purported announcement made prior to the tragic stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal, which resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals, according to an official statement.

Authorities are currently interrogating the detained person to clarify the details surrounding the alleged announcement.

Earlier that same day, a specialized investigation team conducted an examination of the stampede site.

Reports indicate that forensic experts were part of this investigative team.

The team spent approximately 15 minutes at the location, engaging in discussions with police and forensic personnel.

In response to the incident, the West Bengal government established a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by retired Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Anindita Roy Saraswati to investigate the stampede and provide necessary recommendations.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that the findings of the SIT will be disclosed to the public, and actions will be taken based on their recommendations.

To maintain the integrity of the investigation, officials from both the Kolkata Police and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation have been excluded from the SIT.

The SIT has been tasked with delivering its report to the state government within a three-month timeframe.

The stampede occurred on October 17, during the Maha Saptami celebrations, leading to 19 fatalities and 25 injuries as a result of a crowd surge amidst rainfall.
