Kolkata, August 4: A man has been taken into custody on accusations of raping his girlfriend after luring her to a birthday celebration and subsequently extorting money from her, as reported by the police on Tuesday.
Details of the Case
Authorities revealed that the suspect raped the victim again after assuring her of marriage. He is also alleged to have extorted ₹1.5 lakh from her.
The arrest occurred on Monday following a complaint filed by the victim. The incident transpired in the Jadavpur locality of south Kolkata, and the accused has been identified as Anubhav Bhattacharya.
Background of the Relationship
As per police reports, the victim and Anubhav connected through social media, leading to a deepening relationship. They exchanged phone numbers and met several times without any suspicion due to his seemingly good nature.
One day, Anubhav invited her to his birthday party, and she attended, trusting him. However, upon arrival, she discovered that she was alone with Anubhav in the flat, where he allegedly assaulted her.
Promises and Betrayal
Following the assault, he allegedly promised to marry her, which led the victim to believe in his sincerity. Unfortunately, she was raped again under the same pretense. Furthermore, he reportedly took ₹150,000 from her, claiming it was for a business venture.
After receiving the money, the accused began to distance himself and eventually ceased all communication with her.

Ultimately, the victim lodged a formal complaint at the Purba Jadavpur police station, prompting an investigation that led to the suspect's arrest on Monday.
"The accused has been apprehended, and the investigation is ongoing," stated a senior officer from the Kolkata Police.
