Court Directs CBI to Report on Investigation Progress

Kolkata, August 6 - The Calcutta High Court has instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to present a progress report on the investigation into the alleged murder of a female intern at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, following a reported sexual assault. The court has set the deadline for this report to be submitted by August 28, 2024. During a previous hearing on June 25, the CBI provided details of the evidence collected thus far, as per the court's earlier directives.

The bench, comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the investigation remains on track. Additionally, the court reiterated the need for the CBI to file the progress report on the next hearing date, August 28. On May 21, the court had ordered the formation of a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Joint Director of the Eastern Region to probe the events surrounding the intern's dinner on the night of August 9, 2024, up to her funeral.

The victim's family had approached the court, alleging attempts to destroy evidence and cover up the incident immediately after it occurred. The incident has sparked outrage across the medical community nationwide following the assault on the intern.
