KL Rahul Shares How Fatherhood Transformed His Cricket Journey
Fatherhood: A Life-Changing Experience
KL Rahul, the opener for Delhi Capitals, recently opened up about the profound impact of fatherhood on his life and cricket career during an interview on JioStar's 'Superstars.' He described becoming a father as a transformative experience that has enriched both his personal and professional life.
Cherishing the Joys of Parenthood
"Fatherhood has been the most beautiful thing for me. I always thought I had happiness in my life, but I was mistaken. You don't truly understand joy until you hold your baby. This is the most beautiful phase of my life, and I'm savoring every moment of it. Leaving her behind is tough," he expressed. Rahul tied the knot with Bollywood actress Athiya Shetty in January 2023, and they welcomed their daughter, Evaarah, in early 2025.
He further mentioned, "I assumed it would become easier as she grows, but I was wrong; it’s only getting more challenging now that she’s running around and trying to talk. She has traveled with me for a few games, and ideally, I wish to play, return to my daughter, spend time with her, and then head out again. However, that’s not always feasible."
A Fresh Outlook on Cricket
The Indian cricketer, who has been crucial for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2026 season, shared that fatherhood has brought him immense joy, allowing him to view the pressures of his career in a new light. "Coming back home becomes even more special. When I see her smile and receive a hug and kiss, all my injuries, pain, and worries fade away. This has positively influenced my cricket over the past year," Rahul noted.
He elaborated on how his mindset towards the game has shifted since becoming a father. "I no longer overthink the game, which has made it exciting again. When I’m on the field for those 4-5 hours, I’m fully focused, enjoying the game, and striving to perform my best," he shared.
Reflecting on His Cricketing Journey
Discussing his evolution as a player, Rahul remarked, "Ten years ago, I would have done anything to be part of a T20 team. I was never seen as a T20 player or even a strong white-ball player; I was labeled a Test player. Breaking out of that mold and developing my white-ball skills to reach this point is something I take pride in. I’ve made mistakes along the way and could have done better in some areas, but I’m proud that I’ve always given my best effort and prepared thoroughly to maximize my chances of success."
"That’s the nature of sports; things won’t always go your way. You must embrace the journey and maintain balance, whether you win or lose. Whenever I feel down about unachieved goals, I remind myself of what I have accomplished, which provides perspective. I still have time left, so I’ll continue to give my best and see how many trophies I can secure," the seasoned Indian cricketer concluded.
