Call for Collaborative Legislative Process
The Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, made a plea on Friday for all political parties to actively participate in discussions on significant bills, rather than criticizing the government for passing laws without debate later on. While addressing the Lok Sabha, Rijiju highlighted that the Birth and Death Registration (Amendment) Bill was passed that day, providing an opportunity for all members to engage in the debate.
Rijiju stated, 'Honorable Chairman, an important bill was passed today, and we wanted everyone to take part. The Business Advisory Committee had scheduled time for this. You should not go out and claim that bills are passed without discussion.' He further emphasized that members cannot accuse the government of not discussing bills when they missed their chance to participate.
He also mentioned that he had repeatedly urged Congress members to join the discussions. 'I have called upon my colleagues from Congress to engage in discussions regarding the Birth and Death Registration Amendment Bill, which was passed today. Unfortunately, none of the opposition members participated in the debate. This is regrettable. Please do not let this happen in the future.' He stressed that MPs are elected to raise issues on behalf of the public and participate in parliamentary debates.
Rijiju concluded by noting that the public would question why they sent their representatives to Parliament if they do not engage in discussions on bills. Following a strong opposition protest, the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 11 AM on Monday, August 3.
