Call for Action on Women's Reservation

New Delhi: On Sunday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju addressed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, emphasizing that postponing the Women's Reservation Act equates to denying justice to countless women. He urged the opposition party to transcend political differences and support the Act's implementation by 2029, advocating for 'nari shakti'.

In response to Kharge's letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the Congress leader accused the government of rushing the women's reservation law for political gain, Rijiju clarified that this issue transcends politics and is about fulfilling commitments to the women of India.

He stated, 'Promises made to the women of India should not be subject to political delays. When the time comes to enact the Women's Reservation Act, we should not hesitate or question its necessity.'

Rijiju's message to Kharge was clear: 'This is not merely a political matter; it is about honoring our commitments to the daughters of India. Let us unite and advance for 'Nari Shakti'.'

Kharge, in his correspondence with the Prime Minister, expressed concerns about the feasibility of discussing the women's quota law without clarity on delimitation and other related issues. He requested an all-party meeting to be convened after the upcoming state elections conclude on April 29.

The Parliament's Budget Session has been extended, with a special three-day sitting scheduled from April 16 to 18, during which amendments to the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam', commonly known as the Women's Reservation Act, will be discussed for its implementation in 2029.

Rijiju highlighted that the Modi government has made the law a reality, and the necessary amendments regarding delimitation are vital to ensure that women receive their rightful representation before 2029, avoiding further delays.

He mentioned his efforts to engage with leaders from various parties, stating that while dialogue has been ongoing, it is crucial for intentions to be transformed into concrete actions.

He concluded by asserting that delaying the implementation under the guise of procedural requirements is simply a denial of justice to millions of women.
