Inauguration of Khelo India Tribal Games

Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, inaugurated the first edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) today. This event is taking place in three cities across Chhattisgarh and will run until April 3. Mandaviya highlighted that the 2026 edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games signifies a historic milestone for Chhattisgarh, which will serve as a permanent host for these games, held annually in regions such as Bastar, Sarguja, and Raipur.

Highlighting Untapped Talent

The Minister emphasized that talent is not confined to urban areas but is also found in tribal regions, coastal zones, and remote locations. He stated, "Sporting talent is abundant in tribal villages and various regions across the nation. The Khelo India Tribal Games aim to discover and nurture this hidden potential."

Mandaviya pointed out that sports extend beyond just winning medals; they teach discipline, balance, and valuable life lessons, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of fostering a robust sporting culture in India. He mentioned that coaches from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will be present at the games to identify talent through structured pathways, including Khelo India Centres and Centres of Excellence, ensuring athletes receive advanced training for national and international competitions.

Promoting Regional Development

Mandaviya noted that the KITG will not only enhance sports but also stimulate tourism and regional development, attracting participants and attention from across India and the globe in the years to come.

He stressed the importance of transparency and good governance, mentioning reforms like the Sports Governance Bill and the forthcoming Khelo Bharat Niti, which aim to ensure fair selection processes, promote inclusivity, and provide more opportunities for women and tribal athletes. He assured that performance will always be prioritized, with selection processes being fair, transparent, and closely monitored.

Looking Ahead: National Aspirations

The Minister expressed optimism about India's performance in upcoming international competitions, including the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, asserting that India is poised to achieve its best-ever results at the Asian Games.

He reflected on the significant changes in Indian sports over the last decade, driven by a structured approach. Initiatives like Fit India and Khelo India have worked together to enhance participation and develop talent nationwide.

Mandaviya reiterated India's goal to host the Olympic Games in 2036 and to rank among the top 10 sporting nations globally by that time, with aspirations to be within the top five by 2047.
