GUWAHATI, April 6: The Assembly elections held in 2021 were characterized by several tightly contested constituencies. Notably, two seats were decided by margins of less than 1,000 votes, while 13 others had victory margins below 5,000 votes. Additionally, 12 constituencies were won with margins of fewer than 10,000 votes.
These closely contested seats have now become focal points for political parties, which are directing significant resources and efforts to secure victories in these areas.
A significant change in the electoral landscape is the alliance formed between Congress, AJP, and Raijor Dal, which has created a new dynamic for vote consolidation. In the previous elections, the lack of such collaboration led to vote fragmentation that affected the results in various constituencies.
In 2021, in at least six constituencies in upper Assam—Sonari, Jorhat, Naharkatiya, Sadiya, Amguri, and Duliajan—the combined vote share of Congress and AJP surpassed that of the winning NDA candidates.
Even in Dhemaji, where the BJP had a larger margin, the difference between the party and a potential Congress-AJP alliance was approximately 13,000 votes, indicating that consolidation could enhance competitiveness in the upcoming elections.
In Barhampur, BJP’s Jitu Goswami narrowly defeated the Congress candidate by just 751 votes.
Similarly, in Nazira, Congress leader Debabrata Saikia won by a mere 683 votes. Notably, AJP, which contested independently at that time, garnered around 7,800 votes in Nazira and 2,000 in Barhampur—numbers that could be crucial under the current alliance.
The rematch in Nazira between Debabrata Saikia and Moyur Borgohain is anticipated to attract significant attention, while in Barhampur, Jitu Goswami will now face a Congress-supported AJP candidate, Rajen Gohain.
A narrow victory was also noted in Dudhnoi, where Congress candidate Jadav Swargiary won by 1,276 votes. Both major parties are again vying for this seat but have introduced new candidates, suggesting a strategic shift.
Similar close margins were recorded in Bijni (1,003 votes) and Udharbond (2,685 votes), highlighting the necessity for detailed electoral strategies.
Teok presents another intriguing contest, with a renewed battle between AGP and Congress. In 2021, AGP narrowly surpassed Congress by just 1,350 votes. This time, Congress has re-nominated Pallabi Gogoi, while AGP has chosen Bikash Saikia.
In Lakhimpur, BJP’s Manab Deka won by a margin of 3,096 votes, while in Thowra, Sushanta Borgohain (previously with Congress) won by 2,006 votes. Similarly, Rupjyoti Kurmi’s victory in Mariani (2,446 votes) and Hiten Goswami’s win in Jorhat (by under 7,000 votes) indicate the prevalence of competitive races.
From a broader perspective, in the 2021 elections, winning candidates received 44.47 percent of the total votes. The NDA's overall vote share was 44.51 percent, slightly ahead of the Congress-led Mahajot (which included AIUDF) at 43.68 percent.
Smaller parties, including AJP and Raijor Dal, accounted for 4.74 percent of the total votes.
