In a thrilling finale at the Ramakrishna Ashrama Ground 1, Kerala staged an incredible comeback to win the Swami Vivekananda U-20 Men's National Football Championship, defeating Mizoram 4-2 on Wednesday.
After trailing 0-2 at halftime, Sheril Shaji Thomas emerged as Kerala's hero, scoring two vital goals, including a penalty in stoppage time. He finished the tournament as the top scorer with 13 goals, netting in the 71st and 95th minutes, as reported by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Ajith KR initiated the comeback with Kerala's first goal in the 55th minute, followed by a brilliant finish from substitute Shamil EK, who put Kerala ahead in the 83rd minute.
Mizoram's Strong First Half
Mizoram dominated the first half, showcasing impressive attacking football. They opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a stunning long-range shot from Mesak C Lalrinngheta, who curled the ball into the top corner.
Their second goal came in the 34th minute, with Lalrinngheta assisting Vanlairamnghaka, who displayed remarkable composure to round the goalkeeper and score.
Kerala's Second-Half Resurgence
The second half saw a revitalized Kerala team. Ajith KR scored in the 55th minute, capitalizing on a corner that Mizoram failed to clear. His shot deflected off Isak Lalvenhima, finding the net.
This goal shifted the momentum, and Kerala equalized in the 71st minute due to a mistake by Mizoram's goalkeeper, Lalhruaitluanga Kawlni. Sheril Shaji Thomas scored from the rebound after Danish MV's shot was mishandled.
Kerala took the lead in the 83rd minute when substitute Shamil EK executed a brilliant left-footed strike inside the box.

In a dramatic turn of events during stoppage time, Mizoram's Eddie Lalhmangaihzuala fouled Ummer Afaf CA in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty and a red card for Lalhmangaihzuala. Freddy Lalruatkima was also sent off after the incident.
