Wayanad, May 26: Kerala's Forest Minister, Shibhu Baby John, has pledged swift assistance to the family affected by the recent fatal elephant attack in Wayanad. The incident occurred on Tuesday, prompting the Minister to assure that all necessary measures would be taken to provide compensation and support.

The Minister instructed forest officials to restore peace and normalcy in the area impacted by the attack and emphasized the government's commitment to intensifying efforts to mitigate the escalating man-animal conflict in Kerala.

“We will implement additional strategies to alleviate the human-animal conflict that has been troubling the state,” he stated, addressing the growing public frustration over frequent wildlife encounters in regions bordering forests.

The tragic event took place at Kalladi near Meppadi, where a woman lost her life after a wild elephant charged at the scooter she was riding with her husband.

The victim was identified as Jessy, a resident of Puthumala, while her husband, Shaji, sustained injuries during the attack.

Witnesses reported that the couple was traversing the area when the elephant unexpectedly appeared and attacked them.

Jessy suffered critical injuries and did not survive, whereas Shaji was injured and subsequently taken for medical care.

Forest officials and police arrived promptly at the scene to initiate necessary actions following the incident.

This occurrence has once again brought to light the escalating human-wildlife conflict in Kerala's high-range districts, particularly in Wayanad, where elephant encroachments into human habitats and roadways have become increasingly common.
