Kerala Election Office Faces Major Administrative Blunder
Overview of the Incident
A significant administrative oversight has emerged from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Kerala. A document bearing the seal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was mistakenly distributed to other political parties along with an official message from the Election Commission. This incident has caused considerable uproar, prompting the CEO to take swift action by suspending the Assistant Section Officer involved.
Details of the Incident
The Kerala CEO's office clarified on the social media platform 'X' that this incident was a result of a "clerical error."
Sequence of Events
BJP's Request: Recently, the BJP's Kerala unit sought clarification from the Election Commission regarding the 2019 guidelines on publishing candidates' criminal records.
Document Submission: Along with their request, the party attached a photocopy of the original 2019 guidelines, which bore the official BJP seal.
Administrative Oversight: Staff at the election office failed to notice the BJP's seal on the photocopy provided and inadvertently treated it as official information, distributing it to all other political parties.
Clarification from the CEO's Office
Due to this oversight, the office did not recognize the party's mark on the submitted document and mistakenly shared it with other political parties as part of the requested information. It is important to note that there have been several changes to the guidelines since 2019, which have already been communicated to all political parties.
Suspension of Assistant Section Officer
Emphasizing the prompt acknowledgment of the mistake, the CEO's office stated that the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer issued a formal letter on March 21, instructing the retraction of the erroneous document.
To clarify further, the CEO of Kerala mentioned, "The Assistant Section Officer handling this file has been suspended pending the completion of the investigation."
The assembly elections in Kerala, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry are scheduled to take place in a single phase on April 9, with vote counting set for May 4.
