Kerala CM Urges Tamil Nadu to Reconsider Transport Restrictions on Construction Materials

Kerala's Appeal to Tamil Nadu on Construction Material Transport

The Chief Minister of Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, has reached out to his Tamil Nadu counterpart, Joseph Vijay, requesting a reassessment of the restrictions imposed on the interstate transport of construction materials, particularly stone aggregates. He expressed concerns that these limitations could lead to delays in several strategically important national highway projects in Kerala. In his letter, Satheesan emphasized the long-standing relationship between the two states, highlighting it as rooted in 'geographical proximity, cultural similarities, and a tradition of mutual cooperation.' He noted that both governments have consistently collaborated in the spirit of cooperative federalism for the welfare and economic development of their citizens.

Referring to a gazette notification issued by the Tamil Nadu government on July 9, Satheesan pointed out that the new regulations regarding the interstate transport of raw stones and other construction materials have severely impacted the supply of stone aggregates from the districts of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari to Kerala. He mentioned that these districts have traditionally been vital sources for the stone aggregates necessary for completing numerous national highway projects in Kerala. Furthermore, he stated that the availability of suitable stone aggregates for large-scale infrastructure projects in Kerala is limited, making the state heavily reliant on supplies from neighboring Tamil Nadu. He warned that these restrictions have adversely affected the supply chain, causing disruptions in construction activities and posing a significant risk of delays in the completion of several crucial national infrastructure projects.

Satheesan further noted that the National Highway projects would not only enhance connectivity within Kerala but also strengthen logistics, trade, and tourism across South India. He mentioned that these projects would provide easier access to the Vizhinjam International Seaport and the International Container Transshipment Terminal at Vallarpadam, thereby boosting the economic competitiveness of the region. Acknowledging Tamil Nadu's commitment to the sustainable management of natural resources, Satheesan expressed hope that a balanced solution could be reached.
