Onam Festivities Begin in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 4: Kerala embraced the vibrant essence of Onam on Thursday, marking the commencement of a three-day celebration of its most significant cultural festival.

This harvest festival, steeped in tradition and folklore, is characterized by a harmonious blend of devotion, joy, and community spirit that transcends barriers of caste, creed, and age.

From dawn, homes throughout the state buzzed with excitement.

Women and children donned traditional attire, carefully arranging colorful 'pookkalams' (floral designs) at their doorsteps to welcome the legendary King Mahabali, whose return is celebrated during Onam.

Temples, public areas, and shopping centers were adorned with flowers and lanterns, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the week-long state-level Onam festivities organized by Kerala Tourism in the capital, emphasizing that the state's unity, communal harmony, and inclusive mindset are key to its progress.

“This year’s theme is 'Onam Orumayude Eenam, the Real Kerala Story'. The government’s ‘Nava Kerala’ initiative aligns with Onam’s spirit, ensuring that even the most marginalized individuals are included in our societal advancement,” Vijayan remarked.

Central to Onam is the 'Onasadya'—a lavish vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf. Preparations for this elaborate meal, featuring over twenty dishes from avial to payasams, began today in kitchens across Kerala.

Many families invited friends and relatives for early 'sadyas', reinforcing Onam’s essence as a festival of togetherness.

The state has also arranged official events, including cultural fairs, art exhibitions, and performances to highlight Kerala’s rich heritage.

Tourist destinations reported increased visitors, with special Onam packages attracting those eager to experience the state’s festive charm.

Markets were bustling as shoppers hurried to buy kasavu saris, bananas, flowers, and other essentials for the feast.

Onam is not merely a festival; it represents Kerala’s cultural identity in action.

It embodies ideals of prosperity, equality, and unity, reminiscent of Mahabali’s golden era.

As the celebrations escalate over the next two days, culminating in Thiruvonam, the spirit of inclusiveness and joy in Kerala shines brightly, uniting people through tradition, memory, and hope for abundance.

Interestingly, the Onam season brings significant joy to the Kerala State Beverages Corporation, the sole wholesaler of liquor and beer, which experiences record sales during this time.

All educational institutions are closed and will resume next week.
