KC Tyagi Resigns from Janata Dal (United) Amid Political Shift

KC Tyagi, a veteran leader of the Janata Dal (United), has announced his resignation from the party, coinciding with Nitish Kumar's recent election to the Rajya Sabha. Tyagi, who has a long-standing relationship with Kumar, expressed his commitment to advocating for marginalized communities while seeking new political opportunities in Uttar Pradesh. His departure raises questions about the future dynamics within the JD(U) and its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Tyagi plans to convene a meeting to discuss the political situation, indicating potential shifts in his political journey.

KC Tyagi's Departure from JD(U)

On Tuesday, KC Tyagi, a prominent leader of the Janata Dal (United) and former Rajya Sabha member, declared his resignation from the party. This announcement follows the recent election of JD(U) chief and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to the Rajya Sabha.

Kumar, who has held the chief ministerial position for the tenth time since November, is anticipated to resign after his election to the Upper House.

In his statement, Tyagi confirmed that he would not be renewing his JD(U) membership, emphasizing his ongoing commitment to advocating for the marginalized, farmers, and agricultural workers.

He expressed deep respect for Kumar, stating, “I have shared a socialist journey with him for over five decades.” Tyagi mentioned that while his relationship with Kumar remains strong, he is exploring new political opportunities in Uttar Pradesh with a different party.

Tyagi reflected on the formation of the JD(U) on October 30, 2003, through the merger of the Samata Party and Janata Dal, recalling his collaboration with George Fernandes and his roles within the party.

He plans to hold a meeting on March 22 in New Delhi to evaluate the current political landscape, stating that he will determine his next steps after consulting with key individuals.

Previously, Tyagi served as the chief national spokesperson and national secretary general of the JD(U) and was acting as a political advisor after being removed from his spokesperson role in September 2024.

The JD(U) has distanced itself from several of Tyagi's statements, including those regarding the Uniform Civil Code and the conflict in Gaza, and has expressed disapproval of his call for a Bharat Ratna for Kumar.

As a significant ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, the JD(U) is a crucial member of the National Democratic Alliance government.
