Kashmir Erupts in Protests Following the Death of Iran's Supreme Leader
Protests Erupt Across Kashmir
Srinagar: On Monday, protests erupted in various regions of Kashmir in response to the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Authorities responded by restricting movement and limiting mobile internet access.
This marks the second consecutive day of demonstrations following Khamenei's death during joint air strikes conducted by the US and Israel on Saturday.
Protests were reported in areas such as Bemina, Gund Hassibhat, and Jehangir Chowk in Srinagar, as well as in Pulwama, a town in southern Kashmir.
Many demonstrators, primarily from the Shia community, took to the streets chanting slogans against the US and Israel.
In certain locations, security forces resorted to mild measures to disperse the crowds.
Due to the protests, significant restrictions have been enforced on public movement throughout parts of Kashmir.
Officials indicated that the iconic Ghanta Ghar at Lal Chowk has been barricaded to prevent gatherings.
A substantial presence of police and paramilitary forces has been deployed across the city to deter protests.
These restrictions were implemented as a precautionary step to uphold law and order.
Barricades and concertina wires have been installed at key intersections leading into the city.
Similar measures have been taken in Shia-majority areas across other districts in the valley.
These restrictions coincide with a one-day strike called by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU).
The Mirwaiz urged the public to observe the strike with unity and peacefulness.
The strike has garnered support from various political factions, including Mehbooba Mufti, president of the opposition PDP.
Mufti expressed solidarity with the shutdown, emphasizing that the martyrdom of Khamenei serves as a reminder of the injustices faced by the Muslim community worldwide.
In light of the unrest, authorities have temporarily closed all educational institutions, including private schools, to ensure student safety and maintain order.
Mobile internet speeds have also been reduced across Kashmir as a precautionary measure.
Kashmir, home to approximately 1.5 million Shias, witnessed significant protests in areas such as Lal Chowk, Saida Kadal, Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag, and Pulwama on Sunday.
In the meantime, police have issued a statement urging media outlets to uphold high standards of responsibility and professionalism in their reporting.
They advised against publishing unverified information or sensational headlines that could incite panic, emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting to maintain public trust.
