Karnataka Secures Approval for IPL 2026 Matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium
Karnataka State Cricket Association Receives Green Light
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has successfully secured authorization from Home Minister G. Parameshwara to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 matches, including playoffs and finals, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. KSCA Vice President Sujit Somsundar represented the association in discussions and confirmed that all initial safety and infrastructure enhancements recommended by various departments, including police, public works, fire services, and medical authorities, have been completed. These enhancements included widening entry points, improving exit areas, and establishing medical emergency protocols. An expert committee, led by Maheshwar Rao, conducted an inspection of the stadium and approved the implemented measures. Additionally, KSCA plans to launch a social media campaign to educate the public about safety protocols and stadium arrangements. The stadium is now authorized to accommodate matches at full capacity, allowing for 33,000 spectators due to these safety measures.
Approval Granted Following Expert Review
In a recent announcement, KSCA revealed that Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara has given the go-ahead for the upcoming IPL matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium after evaluating a report from an expert committee regarding the stadium's readiness and compliance. "We are pleased to announce that a meeting was convened today at Vidhana Soudha, chaired by Home Minister G. Parameshwara, with the Expert Committee and representatives from KSCA, RCB, and DNA," stated KSCA in their release. "During this meeting, the Expert Committee presented its findings on the preparedness and compliance measures at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Following a thorough review of the arrangements and the committee's recommendations, the Home Minister has officially approved the hosting of the upcoming IPL matches at this iconic venue in Bengaluru."
Match Schedule and Venue Background
The IPL has released the schedule for the first two weeks of the 2026 tournament. KSCA will host two matches in the initial phase: the opening game between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28, followed by another match on April 5 featuring RCB against Chennai Super Kings. It is noteworthy that the Chinnaswamy Stadium last hosted a competitive match during IPL 2025. The venue has faced scrutiny since the tragic incident where 11 fans lost their lives during RCB's victory celebrations on June 3 after their first IPL trophy win.
