Karnataka MLC Elections 2026: Congress Secures Major Victory Amidst Opposition Turmoil
Significant Political Shift in Karnataka
The political landscape in Karnataka has experienced a notable shift following the recent results of the Karnataka Legislative Council (MLC) elections for 2026. The ruling Congress party is celebrating its success, having won five out of eight contested seats, while the opposition alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) faces uncomfortable questions regarding their unity. The elections revealed a significant amount of cross-voting among opposition members, raising concerns about the internal cohesion of the BJP-JD(S) alliance.
Congress Surpasses Expectations
To secure victories for its five candidates, Congress required 140 first-preference votes. However, the counting revealed that the party's candidates received a total of 151 first-preference votes, an unexpected advantage that suggests some BJP and JD(S) legislators may have voted against their party lines. Given that the voting was conducted via secret ballot, it may take time for both parties to identify who deviated from the official stance.
Assessing the Damage: BJP and JD(S)
Within the BJP, there is speculation that apart from expelled legislators ST Somasekhara and Shivaram Hebbar, additional members may have supported Congress candidates. Meanwhile, there are differing opinions within JD(S) regarding the extent of cross-voting. Some BJP leaders suspect that several JD(S) members switched allegiances, while JD(S) representatives argue that their candidate Govind Raju's 14 votes indicate minimal cross-voting.
Strengthening Congress's Position
Congress candidates Vinay Karthik, Tippannappa Kamakanur, BS Shivanna, BK Hariprasad, and PV Mohan have all been elected to the Legislative Council. With these victories, Congress has solidified its position in the 75-member council, facilitating the passage of significant legislation for the ruling party.
Final Vote Tally
Vinay Karthik (Congress) – 32 votes
Tippannappa Kamakanur (Congress) – 30 votes
B.S. Shivanna (Congress) – 30 votes
B.K. Hariprasad (Congress) – 30 votes
P.V. Mohan (Congress) – 29 votes
Raghu Kautilya (BJP) – 29 votes
Lingraj Patil (BJP) – 27 votes
Govind Raju (JD(S)) – 14 votes
