Power Sharing Tensions in Karnataka
Power Sharing Tensions in Karnataka
The current conflict stems from an alleged 'power-sharing agreement' during Congress's 2023 term, which some party members claim entitles Shivakumar to assume the chief minister role in the latter half of the government's five-year term. Recently, several of Shivakumar's supporters have openly called for his promotion to the top position, creating unrest within the party and prompting multiple strategic meetings between the two leaders. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asserted that the discord between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar has severely disrupted Karnataka's administrative machinery.
The BJP has also claimed that seven to eight Congress MLAs and ministers are vying for the chief minister position. According to Karnataka BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra, "The competition for the chief minister's chair is intensifying daily. From what I know, at least seven to eight senior MLAs and ministers from the ruling party are in the race to become CM." He further stated, "The voters of the state have given Congress a clear mandate and placed the BJP in opposition. The BJP will function as an effective opposition and has no intention of forming a government."
