Karnataka Chief Minister Addresses Cauvery Water Management Concerns

Bengaluru, August 2 - Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar of Karnataka expressed on Sunday that his administration is fully dedicated to safeguarding the interests of the state's farmers and citizens regarding the Cauvery water issue. He also urged organizations to retract their call for a proposed 'Karnataka Bandh'. Kannada advocacy groups have announced a 'Karnataka Bandh' on August 13 in response to the Cauvery Water Management Authority's (CWMA) order, which upheld the recommendation of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) to release 3,500 cubic feet of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.

Shivakumar emphasized that there is no need for protests as the situation has improved with recent rainfall, and all political parties have shown their support. He stated that such a bandh would not benefit anyone. Speaking at a press conference following an all-party meeting convened on the Cauvery issue, the Chief Minister assured that the government would continue to make decisions within legal boundaries, prioritize drinking water needs, consult legal and agricultural experts, and monitor the water situation closely before taking any further steps.

He remarked, 'Our government is fully committed to protecting the interests of Karnataka's farmers regarding the Cauvery issue.' The Chief Minister, who hails from the Cauvery basin region and is the son of a farmer, reassured that there should be no doubt among the 7.5 crore residents of the state regarding the government's dedication to safeguarding Karnataka's interests.
