Karnataka CM Affirms Commitment to Beneficiary Programs Amid Fraud Concerns
Karnataka Government's Assurance on Welfare Programs
On Monday, Karnataka's Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar emphasized that the state's guarantee schemes are designed for genuine beneficiaries and will continue without interruption. He highlighted the implementation of stringent verification processes to combat fraud and misuse. Discussing the execution of these guarantee programs, Shivakumar remarked that the opposition's role is to criticize the government, acknowledging that they lack any positive proposals to offer. He reaffirmed the administration's dedication to effectively implementing welfare initiatives.
Shivakumar pointed out that the current state government is rolling out several initiatives that previous administrations failed to implement. However, he admitted that instances of misuse have been reported, including the uploading of incorrect images, the use of fake mobile numbers, and benefits being directed to incorrect bank accounts. He stressed that the advantages of these schemes must reach the rightful beneficiaries directly.
The Chief Minister clarified that the guarantee programs are exclusively for residents of Karnataka, excluding beneficiaries from other states. Referring to initiatives like free bus travel, he stated that eligibility should be limited to voters and residents of Karnataka to ensure that government funds are utilized solely for those intended. To streamline processes, an authentication system is being introduced, which will include a card-based system for accessing benefits under bus travel and other schemes. He mentioned that decisions regarding this system have already been made, and implementation is underway.
Shivakumar dismissed claims that the guarantee programs would be discontinued, asserting that they will remain a cornerstone of the government's agenda. He noted that similar welfare models have influenced other states and emphasized that these initiatives aim to empower women, support families, and strengthen households. Additionally, he stated that measures have been taken to curb fraudulent loan practices associated with these programs.
