Karnataka Chief Minister Allocates ₹10 Crore for Flood Relief in Wayanad
Support for Wayanad Flood Victims
Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his support on Thursday for allocating ₹10 crore to Wayanad in the neighboring state of Kerala, highlighting the values of generosity and humanity. This funding is designated for those affected by the recent floods in Wayanad.
On July 30, 2024, significant landslides in Wayanad resulted in numerous fatalities and left hundreds of families homeless. Siddaramaiah's remarks came in response to a statement from the opposition leader in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashok, who criticized the state government for only allocating ₹95,000 for flood victims in Karnataka while providing ₹10 lakh each to families affected by the landslides in Wayanad, claiming it set a poor precedent.
In his reply during the assembly session, Siddaramaiah acknowledged the severe flooding in Wayanad. He stated, 'It is natural for states to assist one another in times of crisis. In this federal structure, we must be generous and humane.'
The Chief Minister noted that he had announced a ₹10 crore aid package for Wayanad back in June of the previous year. The Wayanad constituency is represented by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi.
BJP MLA C.N. Ashwath Narayan questioned what the state government plans to do for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kashmir, which have also been impacted by cloudbursts and significant landslides. In response, Siddaramaiah reiterated that the government decided to assist Kerala due to its status as a neighboring state. This issue sparked a verbal exchange between the Congress and BJP in the state on Thursday.
The BJP criticized Siddaramaiah for showing favoritism towards Wayanad, referring to him as the 'Chief Minister of Kerala.' Ashok congratulated him on X for allocating a special grant of ₹10 crore to the Wayanad constituency, represented by Priyanka Gandhi.
