Karnataka BJP President Opposes Legislators Seeking IPL Tickets
BJP President's Stance on IPL Tickets
On Friday, BY Vijayendra, the President of the Karnataka BJP, expressed his disapproval regarding MLAs requesting tickets for the Indian Premier League (IPL). He emphasized that elected officials should not seek special privileges, stating, "As legislators, we are not above the common citizen. We should refrain from asking for special treatment. I stand against the notion of legislators requesting IPL tickets," during a press conference at the party's state headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan.
Criticism of State Government's Actions
Vijayendra also took aim at the state government, accusing it of being insensitive and careless, which he claims resulted in the tragic loss of 11 innocent lives in a previous incident. He remarked, "Given that the memory of that horrific tragedy is still fresh, it is equally inappropriate to request special passes or tickets for ourselves. I do not support this practice."
Congress MP Shares Similar Sentiments
Congress MP Manickam Tagore echoed these sentiments, asserting that elected officials should not anticipate preferential treatment regarding match tickets. In a statement, he noted, "While matches are enjoyed by the public, it is not commendable for electoral representatives to seek such tickets. They should not be considered privileged individuals entitled to these benefits. IPL tickets ought to be sold transparently, without any special status for MLAs or MPs."
Reminders of Past Tragedy
These comments arise just before the IPL 2026 season opener, featuring Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Sunrisers Hyderabad at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. This situation also brings back memories of a tragic event from last year. On June 4, a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in 11 fatalities and over 50 injuries, as approximately 300,000 people gathered to celebrate RCB's first IPL title victory. In remembrance, the Karnataka State Cricket Association has decided to leave 11 seats vacant during IPL and international matches at the stadium.
