Haasan was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in June with the backing of the DMK-led coalition.

His party had previously announced the date for his oath-taking, stating, "We are pleased to inform you that Kamal Haasan will take the oath of office on July 25 and assume his responsibilities in Parliament."
