Aizawl, July 17: Kali Kumar Tongchangya, a prominent leader of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), has been elected unopposed as the Chairman of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram, according to official reports.

Tongchangya, who serves as the Member of District Council (MDC) for the Fultuli constituency, was declared the winner by Deputy Chairman Sundor Muni Chakma during a special session convened for the election. This election was called following the resignation of the previous Chairman, Lakkhan Chakma.

Nominations were submitted on July 15, and Tongchangya was the sole candidate to file his papers, leading to his unopposed election.

Nirupam Chakma, the Chief Executive Member and Leader of the House, extended his congratulations to the newly elected Chairman, highlighting his extensive experience and thorough understanding of the Council's operations.

Notably, the CADC had been under Governor’s Rule for a year, from July 7, 2025, to July 7, 2026, due to ongoing political turmoil marked by frequent leadership changes.

Recently, the ZPM, which currently governs the state, formed a political alliance with the BJP on June 23, establishing the Chakma Democratic Alliance Legislature Party, led by senior BJP figure Nirupam Chakma. This coalition has since claimed the right to form the executive body within the CADC.
