Kagiso Rabada's Recovery Progress Ahead of Crucial Test Series Against Australia
Update on Kagiso Rabada's Fitness
Shukri Conrad, the head coach of South Africa, has shared the latest information regarding Kagiso Rabada's recovery from a right hamstring injury. This injury occurred during training in mid-August, just before the significant ICC World Test Championship series against Australia. As a result, Rabada was unable to participate in the ODI series this month, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming Test matches as South Africa prepares for its home summer.
Positive Signs in Recovery
In a conversation with the ICC, coach Conrad expressed optimism about Rabada's rehabilitation. He stated, "The rehab is progressing well, and the programs he's following are effective. I would be surprised if we don't see him in the Test series." He emphasized Rabada's importance to the team, noting, "He tends to perform exceptionally well against Australia, so I am hopeful we will have him back. There is still some work to do, though."
Upcoming Test Series Against Australia
The three-Test series against Australia is set to commence on October 9, just over a year after South Africa triumphed over Australia in the final of the 2023-25 WTC at Lord's, winning by five wickets. Currently, South Africa ranks second in the WTC 2025-27 standings, trailing Australia. The matches will take place at Kingsmead in Durban, St George's Park in Gqeberha, and Newlands in Cape Town.
This series is crucial for both teams' standings in the ongoing cycle, and the Proteas are eager for their leading bowler to be fit for the matches. Rabada has an impressive record against Australia, having taken 58 wickets in 11 Tests at an average of 21.39, including a nine-wicket haul in the 2025 WTC Final.
Final Decision Dependent on Medical Assessment
Conrad mentioned that a final decision regarding Rabada's participation will be made soon, following additional treatment. The team is cautious about risking his fitness, especially with a demanding summer ahead. "We should have a clearer picture by the end of this week after he undergoes intensive treatment. Everything seems to be progressing well," he noted.
"KG is an exceptional athlete and tends to recover faster than most. While I am optimistic, I rely on the medical team's guidance for final decisions."
Depth of the Proteas Team
When asked about the team's ability to perform without Rabada, Conrad highlighted their recent successes even in the absence of key players. He remarked, "Replacing someone like KG isn't easy. However, this team has demonstrated that players can step up when needed."
"While conditions vary, we achieved remarkable results in India without KG, and even in Pakistan without our top player, Temba, we found ways to succeed. This resilience is a defining characteristic of our team. Having KG would be a significant boost, but I am confident in our depth to manage without him if necessary."
