Justin Langer Reflects on LSG's Home Defeat and Playoff Hopes
Langer Expresses Disappointment Over Pitch Adaptation
Justin Langer, the head coach of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), voiced his frustration following the team's fourth consecutive home loss, which occurred during a nail-biting Super Over against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2026 season on Sunday night. In the post-match press briefing, Langer highlighted that the team's inability to adjust to the shifting pitch conditions was a significant factor in their defeat.
"It's quite frustrating. I believed the red soil pitch was excellent—fast and bouncy, making it thrilling for cricket. However, we failed to adapt to the black soil pitch, which was slower, lower, and had some spin," Langer remarked. He expressed disappointment over the team's repeated home losses, empathizing with the fans and supporters. "I feel for our fans and everyone who supports us; we need to adapt to the conditions better," he added.
Staying Positive Amidst Challenges
Despite the recent setbacks, Langer maintained a hopeful outlook regarding LSG's chances of making the playoffs, emphasizing the necessity of positivity during tough times. "We are complicating things for ourselves, but we must remain hopeful. We have a week off now, which gives us a chance to reassess and consider any necessary changes," he stated. Langer further noted, "If you don't keep a positive mindset, there's no point in being here."
Defending Pooran's Super Over Role
In response to the decision to send Nicholas Pooran to bat during the Super Over, Langer defended the choice, referencing Pooran's strong performance against KKR's spinner Sunil Narine. "We anticipated that Sunil Narine would bowl, and if you look at Nicky's record, he has faced Narine more than anyone else. We believed he was the best option to win the Super Over," he explained.
However, Langer acknowledged Pooran's recent struggles with form but expressed confidence in the West Indies batter's ability to regain his confidence. "He's working hard on it. Even the best players go through slumps. You can't fake confidence, and we are supporting him every day. Sometimes, this game can be quite challenging," he remarked.
Thrilling Match Recap
In a gripping Super Over encounter at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, KKR narrowly defeated LSG in IPL 2026. LSG required seven runs off the final ball, and Mohammed Shami hit a six over long-off, pushing the match into a Super Over.
Earlier, Mohsin Khan's outstanding five-wicket haul (5/23) had put KKR's top order under pressure, but Rinku Singh's remarkable unbeaten 83 off 51 balls, which included seven fours and five sixes, led KKR to a competitive total of 155/7. His explosive finish, featuring four consecutive sixes in the last over, was crucial for KKR's recovery.
In response, KKR's bowlers effectively maintained pressure on LSG, but Shami's dramatic last-ball six forced the match into a thrilling Super Over. Rinku Singh was awarded Player of the Match for his exceptional performance.
