Jugraj Singh Discusses Asian Champions Trophy Amid Pakistan's Withdrawal
Focus on the Tournament
Indian hockey defender Jugraj Singh expressed that while fans will miss the excitement of a match against Pakistan during the Asian Champions Trophy, the team's primary goal is to focus on the tournament and aim for another title victory in Punjab. Speaking at the National Tennis Championship in New Delhi, Jugraj highlighted that the tournament will take place in his home state of Punjab starting October 27. Unfortunately, the anticipated clash with Pakistan will not occur, as Bangladesh has stepped in after Pakistan withdrew from the competition.
'A Very Proud Moment'
Jugraj shared his pride in having such a prestigious tournament hosted in his home state, emphasizing the joy of having family members watch the matches live. He remarked, "This is a very proud moment for me. International matches are being held here for the first time in a long while, and it’s exciting to play the Champions Trophy in Punjab, specifically in Jalandhar and Mohali. Our families will be able to witness us play live, which is a significant source of pride for us."
Tournament Venues and Schedule
The Asian Champions Trophy will be conducted at two venues in Punjab: the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar and the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali. All league matches are scheduled from October 27 to November 2 in Jalandhar, with the semi-finals and medal matches moving to Mohali. The semi-finals are set for November 4, followed by the bronze and gold medal matches on November 5.
On Pakistan's Withdrawal and Team's Focus
Regarding Pakistan's absence from the tournament, Jugraj stated, "We cannot comment much on their decision to withdraw; it is their choice. Our main focus remains on the Champions Trophy. If Pakistan had participated, it would have been great, but our priority is to perform well in the tournament. After winning a medal at the Asian Games, we are determined to excel in the Champions Trophy, especially since it is being held in Punjab and India." He acknowledged that the intensity of India-Pakistan matches will be missed, as fans were looking forward to that rivalry.
'Good Teams and Great Matches'
With Bangladesh stepping in for Pakistan, the tournament will feature strong competitors, including the reigning Asian Games champions India, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, China, and Bangladesh. Fresh off their Asian Games gold medal victory, India enters the tournament as the top-ranked team, aiming to maintain their impressive record. Jugraj noted, "Bangladesh's inclusion is significant. Teams like Malaysia, Japan, China, and Korea are formidable opponents. They are not to be underestimated, and fans can expect thrilling matches."
Significance of the Tournament for Punjab
This tournament holds special importance for Punjab, known as the cradle of Indian hockey, having produced numerous legendary players who have shaped the sport's history in the country. The return of international hockey to Punjab is expected to strengthen the bond between the sport and its dedicated fan base, showcasing the state's lasting legacy in hockey.
