Judicial Custody Granted in Twisha Sharma Case Until June 16
Judicial Custody Ordered for Accused in High-Profile Case
On Tuesday, a special CBI court in Madhya Pradesh placed Samarth Singh, the husband of Twisha Sharma, and his mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, in judicial custody for 14 days, until June 16. This decision came after the conclusion of their five-day CBI remand. Following the end of the remand period, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) presented both defendants before the special court, requesting judicial custody instead of further remand for interrogation. The court accepted this request and ordered their custody until the specified date.
According to officials, both individuals will be held at the Bhopal Central Jail, where they will be kept separate from other inmates during their custody. This order was issued by the CBI special court after a hearing on the case on Monday. Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old resident of Noida, reportedly took her own life on May 12 at her in-laws' home in Bhopal. The case has garnered national attention as her family has accused her husband and his relatives of subjecting her to mental harassment and dowry-related abuse since their marriage in December 2025.
Prior to her arrest, Giribala Singh publicly denied the allegations in several media interviews, asserting her innocence while also questioning Twisha Sharma's mental health and medical history. The CBI is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma's death. On Monday, agency officials visited the residence of retired judge Giribala Singh to reconstruct the scene of the incident. Investigators used a dummy body to reenact the events and gather evidence in the presence of both accused.
Earlier, a Bhopal court had granted the CBI five days of custody for Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh to facilitate questioning and verification of evidence related to the case. This order was issued by Special Judge Shobhana Bhalave. The case has sparked significant public interest, leading to several protests in support of Twisha Sharma's family. A silent march was held in Noida on Sunday, where participants demanded justice for the deceased. Addressing the gathered crowd, Twisha's brother, Major Harshit Sharma, expressed confidence in the investigation and thanked supporters for standing with the family.
