Judicial Commission Formed to Investigate Jabalpur Boat Tragedy

In response to the tragic boat accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, which resulted in 13 fatalities, the Madhya Pradesh government has set up a judicial commission. Investigation into Jabalpur Boat Accident

The Madhya Pradesh government has established a one-member judicial commission to investigate the tragic cruise boat accident at the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district, which resulted in the loss of 13 lives.

A senior official announced on Sunday that the commission is expected to submit its report to the government within three months.

The cruise boat, operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department, capsized on April 30, leading to the fatalities of 13 individuals, including women and children, while 28 others were rescued.

The commission will be chaired by retired High Court judge Sanjay Dwivedi, who will examine the causes of the accident, assess the adequacy of the rescue and relief operations, and determine accountability.

Additionally, the commission will review the Inland Vessels Act of 2021 and the National Disaster Management Authority's (NDMA) 2017 guidelines on boat safety, focusing on the auditing and certification of boats, cruises, and water sports activities.

Furthermore, it will recommend the establishment of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the operation and maintenance of boats and water sports activities, as well as the formation of quick response teams (QRTs) at such sites.

The commission is mandated to complete its investigation and submit its findings to the government within three months from the date of notification in the state gazette.
