John Cena Reflects on His Heel Turn and Final WWE Matches
Cena Discusses His Heel Turn
WWE icon John Cena recently shared insights regarding his controversial heel turn, which has sparked much discussion among fans. During his appearance at Fan Expo Chicago 2025, the 17-time world champion acknowledged that his promotional efforts did not resonate well, leading to a disconnect in the storyline.
Earlier this year, Cena's unexpected shift occurred when he attacked Cody Rhodes at the Elimination Chamber, marking his first heel turn in several years. Although the initial moment shocked the audience, the subsequent execution reportedly disappointed many.
In a Q&A session, Cena candidly stated, "I wasn’t upset. No, I failed. And there’s nothing wrong with that—you learn from failure, right? I went out there and bombed. Sh*t happens." He highlighted his openness to criticism and views this misstep as a valuable lesson in his illustrious WWE journey.
Cena's Farewell Tour
This heel turn coincides with what Cena has confirmed as his final year in WWE. At the start of 2025, he announced that this would be his last season in the ring, with his final match scheduled for December.
Throughout this farewell tour, Cena has faced off against some of WWE's top talents, including Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, and Randy Orton. His upcoming opponent will be Logan Paul at WWE Clash in Paris on August 31.
As retirement approaches, fans remain curious about who will be his last opponent. When questioned about it on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cena refrained from revealing any hints.
Cena's Perspective on His Final Match
Regarding the speculation surrounding his last match, Cena remarked, "No, I’ve never operated like that. It’s weird, because I’ve always just been that guy who shows up, does what’s asked, and tries to be reliable. This tour will always be special to me because of you guys in the crowd—but I also want it to be special for the business. My goal has always been to leave WWE better than I found it. Whoever they deem appropriate to get that energy, man, I’m good with that."
