Imphal, Oct 9: Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Congress Member of Parliament and professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), has been terminated from his position at the university effective immediately due to an investigation into sexual harassment claims, as per an official order released on Friday.

The order, dated October 9, 2026, and signed by JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, indicated that the university's Internal Committee (IC) had thoroughly examined the allegations against Akoijam, who was affiliated with the Centre for the Study of Social Systems within the School of Social Sciences.

Following the committee's conclusions, the university opted to enforce the penalty of dismissal in accordance with the relevant service regulations.

“After adhering to the proper procedures and evaluating all pertinent information, and based on the Internal Committee's report, the decision to dismiss Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from the university's services is hereby enacted with immediate effect,” the order specified.

Details of the Internal Committee's findings were not disclosed in the order.

This incident arises amidst ongoing debates regarding media portrayals of the allegations, which Akoijam has vehemently denied.

On September 24, the MP from Inner Manipur revealed that he had initiated a defamation lawsuit amounting to Rs 45 crore against a national media outlet, its editor-in-chief, and others.

In his public remarks, Akoijam characterized the legal action as a preliminary measure and suggested that additional steps would follow. He previously referred to the media coverage as a “media trial,” labeling the reports as unverified, unethical, and unlawful. He insisted that the issue should be resolved through legal channels.

The accusations against him were reportedly made by female students at JNU. Akoijam has refuted these claims and condemned what he perceives as biased media coverage prior to the university's inquiry reaching a conclusion.

It is important to note that the university's disciplinary measures and the defamation lawsuit initiated by Akoijam are distinct issues, with no direct link established between them in the order.

As of the time of this report, there was no available comment from Akoijam regarding the university's dismissal decision.
