JMM's Independent Candidacy Poses Challenge for Congress in Assam Elections
Opposition Alliance Faces Setback in Assam Elections
As the Assam assembly elections draw near, the opposition coalition has encountered a significant setback. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has declared its intention to contest independently on 21 seats in the upcoming elections. This decision has raised concerns within the Congress party, which fears that this move could lead to a fragmentation of tribal votes that typically oppose the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Earlier in the day, JMM announced the names of 21 candidates for the 126-member Assam assembly elections scheduled for April 9. Congress leader Rakesh Ranjan expressed that the party had anticipated JMM would participate as part of the opposition alliance.
Concerns Over Vote Splitting
Ranjan stated, "We aimed to contest the Assam elections together." Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, along with other senior leaders, had traveled to Jharkhand with hopes of forming an alliance with JMM. However, the party's decision to field 21 candidates independently raises the possibility of splitting the tribal vote.
Ranjan emphasized that both parties share a common goal of defeating the BJP in Assam. Jharkhand Congress President Keshav Mahato Kamlesh mentioned that their party made serious and positive efforts to negotiate an agreement with JMM.
Proposal for Collaboration
Kamlesh revealed that Congress proposed to allocate five to seven seats to JMM, along with offering organizational support in constituencies where JMM candidates would contest. He added, "Our intention was to ensure representation for JMM in the Assam assembly through a united effort."
