Jitesh Sharma Faces Criticism for Slow Performance in IPL 2026 Match

In the IPL 2026 match against Delhi Capitals, Jitesh Sharma's slow innings has drawn criticism, overshadowing RCB's respectable total of 175 runs. Despite a strong start from Phil Salt, Sharma's inability to accelerate during crucial moments has raised concerns about his performance. His aspirations to be a 'hero' in pressure situations, as discussed in a viral video with AB de Villiers, contrast sharply with his recent struggles, where he has only managed to score 52 runs in five matches. This article delves into the match details and Sharma's mindset as he navigates the challenges of the ongoing season.

RCB's Performance Against Delhi Capitals

In the IPL 2026 match held on April 18 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma has come under fire for his sluggish innings against the Delhi Capitals. After being invited to bat first by DC captain Axar Patel, RCB managed to score a total of 175 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Phil Salt was the standout performer for RCB, scoring 63 runs off 38 balls, featuring 4 fours and 3 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 165.79. Other contributors included Tim David (26), Virat Kohli (19), and Devdutt Padikkal (18), who all made starts but failed to convert them into significant scores.

For the Delhi Capitals, bowlers Axar Patel (2/18), Kuldeep Yadav (2/32), and Lungi Ngidi (2/39) each took two wickets, effectively limiting RCB's scoring potential, especially during the middle and death overs. Mukesh Kumar also played a vital role, taking 1 wicket for 32 runs, which further stifled RCB's momentum.

Jitesh Sharma's Underwhelming Innings

Despite RCB's respectable total, Jitesh Sharma's slow innings has sparked discussions among fans and analysts alike. Coming in to bat after Rajat Patidar's dismissal at 131/4, Jitesh's performance failed to provide the necessary acceleration during the crucial death overs.

Although he formed partnerships with Tim David, Romario Shepherd, and Krunal Pandya, his contribution was minimal, scoring just 14 runs off 20 balls. This means he accounted for only about 21% of the partnership runs while consuming a significant number of deliveries, which hampered RCB's ability to finish strong.

Jitesh entered the crease in the 13th over and remained until the penultimate ball of the final over, but his inability to increase the scoring rate during the death overs resulted in a modest finish for RCB.

Jitesh Sharma's Aspirations and Reality

Following his slow innings, a video featuring Jitesh Sharma and former RCB player AB de Villiers gained traction on social media. In the clip, Jitesh expressed his desire to be the 'hero' in high-pressure situations, stating that he thrives when the top order collapses, allowing him to take charge.

On AB de Villiers' YouTube channel, Jitesh mentioned, "I always pray to God for my top order to collapse so I can bat and score. I see it as an opportunity to become a hero. I visualize such innings in my life. I have always wanted to do something magical."

He emphasized the importance of staying present, focusing on breathing, and assessing the match situation to manage pressure effectively. However, his recent performances have not aligned with his aspirations, as he has struggled to convert starts into impactful innings, accumulating only 52 runs in 5 matches at an average of 10.40.
