Jaya Bachchan's Fiery Speech in Rajya Sabha

On Wednesday, Jaya Bachchan, a member of the Samajwadi Party, expressed her frustration towards a disruptive member during her speech in the Rajya Sabha. While discussing the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, she firmly told the interrupter to sit down. A viral video captured her questioning the chairperson, Dr. Dinesh Sharma, saying, “How can you reduce my time? I will go to the well.”

As soon as Jaya began her address, she extended greetings for Ram Navami, which is celebrated on Thursday. Following this, some members from the opposite side began to speak. Bachchan pointed out to the chair that if someone starts talking, everyone’s attention shifts to them. She insisted that if she is speaking, all focus should remain on her. The video also shows the chairperson reprimanding members and asking them to take their seats. He advised Bachchan to stick to the topic as her time was being wasted, to which she replied that her time was in the chair's hands.

While waiting for other members to stop speaking, the chairperson reminded her again that her time was being wasted. In response, she interjected, stating, "You cannot take my time," and mentioned her intention to go to the well, which is an open area in front of the chair in the parliament. Jaya raised objections regarding the necessity of bringing this bill forward, emphasizing that this is the budget session and discussions should focus on financial matters. She called for the bill to be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

She further stated that this community is socially marginalized and should not face discriminatory treatment. Bachchan highlighted that this community has the blessings of Lord Ram and is invited during auspicious occasions. She noted that historically, such communities were employed by kings for protection. She urged the government not to incur the wrath of this community.
