Javed Akhtar's Bold Stance: Choosing Hell Over Pakistan Amidst Extremist Criticism
Javed Akhtar's Controversial Remarks at Book Launch
New Delhi: Renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar, frequently criticized for his perspectives on nationalism and religion, expressed that if faced with a choice between Pakistan and hell, he would opt for hell.
Speaking at the book launch of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut in Mumbai on Saturday night, the 80-year-old Akhtar, who identifies as an atheist, shared that he receives daily abuse from extremists on both sides of the India-Pakistan divide.
"One day, I’ll show you my Twitter (now X) and WhatsApp. I face insults from both ends. While I appreciate the support I receive, it’s undeniable that extremists from both nations target me. If one side were to stop, I would find that concerning," Akhtar remarked.
"One faction labels me a 'kaafir' (non-believer) and condemns me to hell, while the other accuses me of being a 'Jihadi' and tells me to go to Pakistan. If I must choose between Pakistan and hell, I would rather go to hell," he stated, eliciting applause from the audience.
The celebrated writer emphasized the necessity for citizens to remain independent of any political party's ideology, allowing them to express their true beliefs.
"Citizens should not be bound by party loyalty. All parties belong to us, yet none truly do. I consider myself one of those citizens. Speaking from one perspective may upset one side, but addressing multiple viewpoints can displease many more," he added.
Having moved to Mumbai at 19, Akhtar credited the city and Maharashtra for his success. Over his three decades in Mumbai, he mentioned receiving police protection four times due to threats, three of which were attributed to 'mullahs'.
In a recent interview, Akhtar noted the lack of warmth in India-Pakistan cultural relations, stating that now is not the time to discuss whether Pakistani artists should be permitted to work in India. His comments followed the ban on the film 'Abir Gulaal', featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, from releasing in Indian theaters after the Pahalgam attack.
