Tourism Sector Faces Challenges

On Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed concerns regarding the significant decline in tourism, emphasizing the administration's commitment to ensuring a safe and incident-free Amarnath Yatra.

Abdullah noted, "The tourism industry has suffered greatly, with very few visitors during the summer months. Our priority is to facilitate a smooth Amarnath Yatra, ensuring that all devotees return home safely after their pilgrimage."

Meeting with Hoteliers Association

During a meeting with the Hoteliers Association at the Civil Secretariat, Abdullah addressed the impact of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack on tourism in the region.

He reassured stakeholders that the government is dedicated to supporting the tourism sector and will take their suggestions into account.

Call for a Tourism Revival Plan

The Chief Minister urged the development of a comprehensive tourism revival strategy, stating, "I recommend that we carefully design and finalize this plan without rushing it."

He suggested collaborating with the Tourism Department to create a robust strategy following this year's Shri Amarnath ji Yatra.

Support for Tourism Stakeholders

Abdullah proposed a support package for various tourism-related businesses, including hotels, houseboats, and handicrafts, and encouraged innovative ideas like shopping festivals similar to those in Dubai.

He also highlighted the importance of cultural performances and attractions to enhance the visitor experience.

Addressing Financial Strain

Recognizing the difficulties faced by the tourism sector, Abdullah acknowledged the pressures on business owners, particularly those managing loans for tourist vehicles and accommodations.

He plans to advocate for a dedicated relief package from the Government of India to assist affected individuals, especially in border areas.

Abdullah noted the ongoing interest in Jammu and Kashmir as a travel destination, mentioning that he has received numerous inquiries about promoting the region.

Regarding cross-border tensions, Abdullah stated that there have been no reports of ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and that damage assessments are underway.

He emphasized the importance of presenting India's stance on cross-border terrorism through diplomatic channels.
