Jammu and Kashmir CM Calls for Accountability After Pahalgam Terror Attack
Demand for Accountability Following Tragic Attack
On Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the need to hold someone accountable for the terrorist attack that occurred in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily tourists. He stated that the attack was rooted in religious discrimination. During a press conference, Abdullah questioned who should be held responsible for this failure, particularly if it stemmed from a lapse in intelligence.
Abdullah expressed that it is unacceptable for 26 lives to be lost without any response from authorities. Acknowledging that there was a failure in security and intelligence, he insisted that accountability must be established. On April 22, terrorists targeted a group of tourists in the picturesque town of Pahalgam in South Kashmir. In retaliation for the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on the morning of May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POJK). Following this, India successfully thwarted a military incursion from Pakistan and conducted airstrikes on their bases.
After a phone call from Pakistan's DGMO to his Indian counterpart, both nations agreed to a ceasefire. In an interview with a media outlet, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha acknowledged that the attack was indeed a result of security lapses and took responsibility for it. He characterized the Pahalgam incident as a Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attack aimed at inciting communal division within India.
