A Historic Match in Belfast

India faced a 34-run defeat against Ireland in the first T20I held in Belfast. However, the standout moment for many in Rajasthan was the remarkable debut of Jai Moondra, a left-arm pacer from Tonk, whose performance contributed to Ireland's first-ever international win over India.

Jai Moondra's Impressive Debut

Making his international debut on Friday at the age of 29, Jai Moondra made an immediate impact by taking the wicket of Sanju Samson with his very first delivery. He went on to dismiss Shivam Dube, concluding his spell with impressive figures of 2 wickets for 25 runs in four overs.

Mixed Emotions in Tonk

Back in Tonk, Jai's family celebrated his achievement while also feeling the sting of India's loss. They cheered for every run scored by the Indian team but felt immense pride whenever Jai took a wicket. His mother, Vidya Moondra, expressed her mixed feelings, stating, "I am sad that India lost, but my son performed exceptionally well and brought pride to our family, Rajasthan, and the nation. I am proud of him."

Vidya shared that after completing his 10th grade, Jai focused on his studies as his father wanted him to earn a degree before pursuing cricket. After finishing his education, he joined a cricket academy.

Family's Pride and Joy

Jai's uncle, Kanhaiya Lal Moondra, also expressed his joy, saying, "Words cannot describe my happiness. My son played with such passion and made history. We are receiving numerous calls praising his performance. While we are saddened by India's loss, we are incredibly proud of him."

Jai's Journey from Tonk to Dublin

Jai's cricketing journey began in Tonk, where he trained under coach Imtiaz Ali, on the same ground that produced Indian pacer Khaleel Ahmed. He represented Tonk and Rajasthan at the Under-14 level before moving to Ireland in May 2021 to pursue an M Tech degree.

While studying, Jai continued to play cricket, initially joining the renowned Leinster Cricket Club in Dublin. He was part of the team that won the Irish Senior Cup in 2023, gradually making a name for himself with his aggressive left-arm pace and useful batting. After obtaining Irish citizenship in 2025, he secured a spot on the national team.

A Memorable Debut Performance

In his debut match, Jai made an immediate impact, being introduced into the attack in the second over of India's innings. He dismissed Sanju Samson with his first delivery and allowed only seven runs in that over. In the fifth over, he was trusted again by his captain, conceding just four runs.

He struck again in the 16th over, taking the wicket of Shivam Dube off the last ball, completing a sharp return catch after giving away six runs in that over. Although he nearly claimed a third wicket in his final over, a catch was dropped on the last ball. Ultimately, he finished with figures of 2 for 25, playing a pivotal role in Ireland's historic victory.

Looking Ahead

Ireland is set to face India again in the second T20I on Sunday in Belfast, aiming to secure the series.
