Chennai, Sep 4: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone on Friday with the successful launch of its advanced Earth observation satellite, EOS-05, using the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre located in Sriharikota. This launch enhances India's capabilities in space-based monitoring.
The GSLV-F17, measuring 51.7 meters, took off from the second launch pad at 2:55 a.m. after a countdown that lasted 27.5 hours.
This three-stage launch vehicle performed flawlessly, placing EOS-05 into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.
Weighing approximately 2,367 kg, the satellite will undergo a series of maneuvers to reach its operational orbit.
EOS-05 is designed to deliver advanced Earth imaging from geosynchronous orbit, allowing for repeated observations of extensive geographical areas from a higher altitude compared to traditional low-Earth orbit satellites.
This satellite is poised to significantly enhance India's monitoring capabilities over the Indian subcontinent and surrounding regions, providing crucial data for various civilian and strategic uses.
Its imaging capabilities will aid in disaster management, agricultural monitoring, environmental assessments, natural resource management, and tracking weather-related phenomena.
By providing frequent imaging from its operational orbit, EOS-05 is expected to improve information availability during fast-evolving natural disasters and emergencies.
This mission represents a vital advancement for India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle program, marking the 19th flight of the GSLV, which incorporates India's own cryogenic upper stage technology.
The successful launch signifies progress in ISRO's goal to establish Earth-imaging capabilities from geosynchronous orbit, especially following the previous unsuccessful attempt with GSLV-F10 in August 2021.
EOS-05 adds another sophisticated tool to ISRO's expanding Earth observation program and is anticipated to complement the existing satellite network.
With the GSLV-F17 mission's success, India has bolstered its ability to conduct sustained observations of vast areas from space, providing a critical technological asset for disaster response, development planning, and national needs.
