Israel's Minister Declares Intent to Target Syrian President Amid Ongoing Conflict
Israel's Bold Statement on Syrian Leadership
In the midst of the ongoing internal conflict in Syria, Israeli Minister Amichai Chikli has made a significant announcement. He stated that the Syrian acting president, Ahmad al-Shara, should be dealt with, likening him to Hamas terrorists. According to Chikli, al-Shara's fate will mirror that of the Hamas leader.
Chikli took to social media to declare his intentions regarding al-Shara's elimination, a statement that has heightened political tensions in the Middle East.
Reasons Behind Israel's Discontent with Al-Shara
Israel's military actions intensified following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, which coincided with its conflict against Hamas. After Assad's departure, Israel began its offensive in southern Syria, seizing control of areas beyond the Golan Heights and designating them as war zones.
Israeli officials claim that within these war zones, Syrian soldiers and supporters of al-Shara are targeting the Druze community, which numbers around 700,000 and is recognized as a minority in Syria.
Israeli Defense Minister Katz emphasized the commitment to protect the Druze community at all costs. Recently, Israeli forces have engaged in firing at al-Shara's supporters in Syria, with reports of bombings on tanks in various locations.
Possibility of Targeted Assassination of Al-Shara
While there has been no official response from Syria regarding Chikli's remarks, Israel's history of targeted killings cannot be overlooked. The nation has previously eliminated individuals from Jordan to Iran.
However, al-Shara enjoys direct support from Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and former U.S. President Donald Trump has also recognized him. This complicates Israel's potential actions against him.
The United States has urged both Israel and Syria to establish a ceasefire concerning the Druze situation, indicating that the path forward for Israel may not be straightforward.
