Israel Welcomes 240 Indian Jews from the Bnei Menashe Community
A Special Connection Between Israel and Indian Jews
Recently, a group of 240 Indian individuals was warmly welcomed in Israel, where they were celebrated with songs and waving flags. This group shares a unique and mysterious bond with Israel, having arrived from India. As they boarded their flight to Israel, officials celebrated their arrival with music and festivities. These individuals belong to the Bnei Menashe community, a group of Jews who settled in India centuries ago. The lineage of the Bnei Menashe is even referenced in the Bible. Notably, this community has established itself in the northeastern region of India.
Israel's Initiative for the Bnei Menashe Community
A few months ago, Israel made a significant decision to repatriate the remaining 5,800 members of the Bnei Menashe community residing in northeastern India, particularly in Manipur. This initiative, supported by India, aims to facilitate their return to Israel over the next five years. The first group of 240 Bnei Menashe members has already arrived in Israel. Interestingly, any Jew living anywhere in the world has the right to become an Israeli citizen under the Law of Return, which grants them the opportunity to immigrate to Israel. In 2005, a religious leader in Israel recognized the Bnei Menashe community as people of Israeli descent, paving the way for their return.
Reasons Behind Israel's Repatriation Efforts
Israel's motivation for this repatriation is twofold. Firstly, the country aims to provide employment opportunities to these Jews in place of Palestinians, utilizing their skills across various sectors. Israel believes that these individuals can contribute to national security more effectively than the Palestinian workforce. Secondly, the repatriation is crucial for Israel's security strategy. The Bnei Menashe community is intended to be settled in a specific area known as Upper Galilee, located in northern Israel, which shares a border with Lebanon. This region currently has a majority population of Palestinians and Arabs, leading to concerns about the influence of the Hezbollah terrorist organization if the Jewish population continues to decline.
