Israel's Concerns Over Ongoing Negotiations

The Israeli ambassador to the United States has voiced strong criticism regarding the current cease-fire negotiations with Lebanon, labeling the situation as a 'train wreck' just before a new round of US-mediated discussions set for Tuesday. Ambassador Yechiel Leiter expressed his worries that the initial goals of the talks—such as limiting Iranian influence in Lebanon and dismantling Hezbollah—are being overlooked as the negotiations continue.

Warning of a 'Train Wreck'

Leiter noted that this is the fifth round of discussions involving Israel, Lebanon, and US mediators. He stated, 'In the previous four rounds, we were all aligned, heading toward the same goal.' The US had been spearheading the initiative, with clear objectives in mind.

According to the ambassador, these objectives included establishing enduring peace between Israel and Lebanon, curtailing Iran's influence in the area, dismantling Hezbollah's military capabilities, and ensuring long-term security for both nations. However, he cautioned that the negotiations seem to be losing their way. 'The train is at risk of derailing,' he remarked, expressing hope that negotiators could regain focus and momentum.

Addressing Hezbollah and Iran's Influence

Leiter emphasized that weakening Hezbollah, a significant Iran-supported militant and political entity in Lebanon, should remain a crucial aspect of any sustainable agreement. Israeli officials have consistently maintained that Hezbollah's military presence near Israel's northern border represents a serious security threat and have called for more robust actions to mitigate the group's influence.

He also highlighted the necessity of diminishing Iran's role in Lebanon, which Israel views as essential for achieving long-term stability in the region.
