Ishan Kishan Leads East Zone to Duleep Trophy Victory with Strong Team Spirit
East Zone Triumphs in Duleep Trophy
Ishan Kishan's successful tenure as captain in Indian domestic cricket reached new heights as East Zone secured the 2026 Duleep Trophy on Thursday. He attributed the victory to the team's unity and mutual support among players. Kishan expressed his confidence in his leadership abilities while noting that their journey is far from over.
After a 13-year hiatus, East Zone claimed the Duleep Trophy title following a final match against South Zone that concluded in a draw on the fifth day. The team established a significant first-innings lead, scoring 708 runs initially. They later declared at 388 for seven in their second innings, setting a challenging target of 761 runs for South Zone. However, with limited time left and a pitch that offered little help to bowlers, the match ended after South Zone faced just two deliveries in the 100th over.
Teamwork at Its Best
"We achieved this title as a collective unit. The most crucial aspect was everyone looking out for one another. I believe I've been an effective leader (with a playful smile), but our journey continues beyond this point," Kishan remarked post-match.
Outstanding Domestic Performance
Kishan had a stellar run in the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with Jharkhand, leading them to their first-ever SMAT title. He made a comeback to the Indian team after his last T20I appearance against Australia in late 2023.
In the tournament, Kishan emerged as the leading run-scorer, amassing 517 runs across 10 innings with an impressive average of 57.44, which included two centuries and two fifties. He also scored a century in the final against Haryana, maintaining a remarkable strike rate exceeding 197.
Personal Growth During Break
Kishan shared that his time away from the Indian team allowed him to become more composed and focused, enhancing his game awareness, situational understanding, and decision-making skills.
"The break helped me remain calmer and more engaged with the game, understanding what is crucial, and improving my situational awareness," he explained.
