Ishan Kishan Faces Challenges in Overseas T20I Matches

Ishan Kishan's recent performance in overseas T20I matches has raised concerns, particularly after a disappointing outing against New Zealand where he scored a duck. Despite a strong year overall, his struggles in SENA conditions continue to be a topic of discussion. Meanwhile, New Zealand celebrated a significant victory in the fourth T20I, with standout performances from Jacob Duffy and Glenn Phillips. As Kishan looks to improve, the upcoming ICC tournaments will be crucial for his career.

Ishan Kishan's Struggles in Foreign Conditions

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has once again raised concerns regarding his performance in overseas matches, as he recorded a three-ball duck against New Zealand during the fourth T20I in Auckland on Friday. With a daunting target of 260 runs, expectations were high for Kishan, who has been one of India's standout T20I players this year. Unfortunately, he fell to Jacob Duffy without scoring.

Throughout 36 T20I matches this year, Ishan has accumulated 1,159 runs, boasting an average of 35.12 and an impressive strike rate exceeding 170, including one century and seven half-centuries, with a top score of 103. However, his performance in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) conditions has been disappointing, with only 177 runs in 10 innings, averaging 17.7 and a strike rate of 118, featuring just one fifty and a best score of 56.

This year has been particularly challenging for Ishan in SENA T20Is, where he has recorded scores of 0, 49, 13, 4, and 56 against England, and 1 and 0 in two matches against New Zealand. Overall, in 12 SENA matches throughout his international career, he has managed only 192 runs at an average of 16, with just one fifty. This also includes two ODIs against England this year, where he scored 1 and 14.

Upcoming Challenges for Ishan

It will be intriguing to observe how Ishan adapts to SENA conditions, especially with two significant tournaments on the horizon: the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, and the ICC T20 World Cup 2028, co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.

New Zealand's Dominance in the Fourth T20I

New Zealand showcased their strength with a four-wicket haul from Jacob Duffy and a century from Glenn Phillips, leading to an 87-run victory over India in the fourth T20I, marking their first win in the five-match series. The series now stands at 3-1 in favor of India, with one match remaining.

Phillips scored 107 runs off 49 balls, hitting six fours and ten sixes, while Michael Bracewell contributed 65 runs off 25 balls, including four boundaries and six sixes, propelling New Zealand to a formidable total of 259/7, the highest ever against India. Duffy's impressive bowling figures of 4/23, along with Santner's 2/24 and Matthew Fisher's 2/40, ensured India struggled, ultimately bowled out for just 172 runs in their 20 overs. Tilak Varma was India's top scorer with 35 runs off 35 balls, including one four and three sixes.
