Is the CBI Taking Over the Sabarimala Gold Theft Investigation? Here's What We Know!
CBI Ready to Investigate Sabarimala Gold Theft
Kochi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has indicated its willingness to take charge of the inquiry into the alleged extensive gold theft and irregularities at the Sabarimala temple. The agency informed the Kerala High Court that it would not oppose an investigation if directed to do so.
This development is particularly important given the increasing criticism regarding the slow progress of the investigation being conducted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the High Court, which is comprised of Kerala Police officers.
The case involves allegations of irregularities concerning the gold coverings and Dwarapalaka (gatekeeper) sculptures at the Sabarimala Sannidhanam. Accusations include claims that gold was melted down, diverted, and misappropriated without proper documentation.
Previously, the High Court noted that the SIT's investigation was moving at a sluggish pace, even as vital forensic evidence, including a report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to ascertain the age of the gold, is nearing completion.
Serious allegations have emerged suggesting that the smuggling of gold sheets from Sabarimala may have inter-state connections and potential links to international antiquities trafficking networks.
In light of these developments, the CBI has expressed its readiness to intervene, citing the broader implications of the case that extend beyond state lines.
The High Court's ruling on whether to transfer the investigation to the central agency is currently awaited.
The controversy intensified following statements from Govardhan, a gold trader from Bellary, who suggested the presence of a powerful mafia involved in temple affairs.
BJP State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who petitioned the High Court for a CBI investigation, contended that a fair inquiry would be compromised if the case remains with the State Police, especially with senior Devaswom Board officials under suspicion.
He also referenced previous allegations of significant discrepancies in the accounts related to the 32 kg of gold donated to Sabarimala by Vijay Mallya.
Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has joined the investigation to examine the financial aspects of the alleged gold theft.
Recently, the Kollam Vigilance Court granted the ED's request for certified copies of FIRs, remand reports, and related documents in the case, instructing that these records be provided.
With both the CBI and ED preparing to take action, the investigation into this sensitive issue surrounding the Sabarimala shrine is poised to enter a critical phase.
