Is India Facing a Power Crisis? Government Sets the Record Straight!
Government Responds to Power Crisis Claims
New Delhi: On Sunday, the government refuted claims circulating on social media that suggested India was on the brink of a power crisis due to coal shortages, labeling these assertions as 'misleading.' Officials confirmed that the nation's power infrastructure is stable and fully equipped to handle current demands.
The clarification was issued by the Fact Check unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB), which indicated that the misinformation was intended to incite unnecessary fear among the populace.
Data from official sources revealed that the peak power demand reached 229 GW on May 2, 2026, and this demand was met without any deficits. Authorities reassured that there have been no interruptions in electricity supply nationwide.
The PIB also highlighted that thermal power plants currently hold a coal stock of 53.702 million tonnes, sufficient for operational needs. The government has been vigilant in monitoring coal supplies to ensure continuous power generation.
Addressing concerns about grid stability, the PIB affirmed that power availability is adequate and that grid operations, including distribution, are conducted following established protocols. Effective planning and collaboration among stakeholders have facilitated smooth operations, even during peak demand periods.
The statement also countered claims regarding fluctuations in grid frequency, explaining that existing control mechanisms provide ample operational margins to maintain secure grid functions. These systems are designed to stabilize the grid automatically and avert cascading failures or blackouts.
During the summer months, electricity demand typically rises due to increased use of cooling devices. However, the government has implemented proactive strategies, including advance fuel stocking and capacity planning, to efficiently manage these seasonal spikes.
Officials urged the public to depend on verified information and refrain from disseminating unverified claims that could cause confusion or panic.
The PIB Fact Check unit has encouraged citizens to report any misleading information related to the government via its official WhatsApp number, +91 8799711259, and email, factcheck@pib.gov.in, as part of its initiative to combat misinformation.
